Meaning of the word Itaipu
click to enlargeItaipu is the Guarani word for "the singing stone"; Ita = stone, pu = noise, song. Itaipu was the name of a rock island located in the middle of the Parana River where the dam is located today. When the water splashed on the rock island it produced a loud noise. From that we have the name Itaipu.

In 2016 Itaipu produced 103.09 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) OR 103,098,366 MWh, a record of production that has never been held by any other power plant in the world. The power plant is responsible for 75% of the energy consumed in Paraguay (7 million inhabitants) and 15% of that consumed in Brazil (206 million inhabitants).
