Coordinates: 25º 24´ and 29" S, 54º 35´ 20" W

At the Visitor Center the visitor will be shown a film about the construction and operation of the Itaipu Dam and also about the environmental conservation efforts in the area. Afterwards, the visitor will be transported by motor coach to the observation deck in front of the Dam. Continuing the tour, visitors will be taken to the top of the Dam, from where it is possible to understand the power of water; on one side 29 billion cubic meters of water and on the other side the valley and two cities.

Children under 12 years old USD $5.00
Disable people free of charge. Visit in English, Spanish and Portuguese from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

If you don´t have time to see the Itaipu Dam during the day, another option is to visit it in the evening. At the Itaipu Dam you listen to a sound trek and see the dam lit up. This tour is offered only twice a week; when you are in Iguassu you can ask for more information about it.

One must book this tour in advance. There are a limited number of buses for this tour. Phone: +45 35206999 (tool free 0800 645 4645)

VISITING ROUTE

1 - Welcome to the Illumination of the Itaipu Dam
At the Visitors Reception Center, you will watch a video that tells the story of Itaipu.

2 - Central Lookout
Here you will be welcomed by the music of one of the great names of the accordion in Latin America.

3 - Itaipu illuminated
See the grandeur of the mill unfolding little by little! The lights give an idea of the extension of the dam, which is 8 km. Fireworks brighten the scenery.

4 - The plant seen close up
The buses pass through the illuminated Itaipu. You will be surprised with more details of the plant and the size of the forced pipelines.

Special Tour

This is the best tour available at Itaipu. The Special Tour allows visitors into the inner section of the dam. Provides bilingual guides, a film about Itaipu and a small bus with water on board. It takes about 2 1/2 hours. If there are not works on seven stops are made:
- Central Observation Deck Station and the Poty Panel
- Concrete Dam Station
- Cathedral Station
- Production Building Station
- Central Control Room Station
- Trail Station
- Station Gallery

Limitations:

Minimum age for this visit is 14 years old. People wearing flip flops, open sandals and shorts are not allowed on this visit.

There are also combo tours including the Biological Refuge + the Planetarium + the Eco-museum or even the special tour and the panoramic tour. Please, ask information about it when you arrive at the Itaipu visitors center.

Itaipu Dam by bike
Itaipu By Bike, allows groups of cyclists to enjoy the greatness of the plant, on the bike paths and trails that promote the contemplation of incredible landscapes.

Description of the tour:
- Limited places;
- The tour does NOT include the bicycle;
- Only Mountain Bike style bicycles are accepted;
- It is mandatory to arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled time;
- The group´s departure will always be in front of the ticket office of the Itaipu Binacional Visitors Center;
- The tour is guided by the monitor;
- A vehicle will accompany cyclists throughout the route to provide towing assistance when necessary;
- There will be an ambulance available;

ROUTE:
● Total distance: 19 km
● Estimated duration: 1h30 min
● Perception of effort: moderate
● Stops on the route: four
● Soil types: asphalt, earth, gravel and forest.

NOTE: one must bring his own mountain bike. Only mountain bikes are accepted.

Planetarium
click to enlargeAt the Astronomy Center (Polo Astronomico) near Itaipu one can visit the Planetarium.

Wednesday to Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Friday and Saturday at 10:00 a.m., 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
